Islands in the sky. The sea of clouds, Cusuco National Park.

Islands in the sky

40 minutes from San Pedro Sula you can start to apreciate the sea of clouds. This formation forms when the cold air of the mountains combines with the hot winds of the caribean. Normally when their is a change is temperature of cold to hot (rainy night and then hot day).

Some people call it islands in the sky because you can only see the mountain tops above the cloud formation. Species evolved to live in this type of enviroments making it hard for them to go down where their surroundings dramatically change, making it imposible for some of them to get food or protect themselves.

All of this is disappearing!

Due to illegal hunting and lodging many sites have lost their entire forest, destroying the precious and delicate eco systems. Our government´s inept institutions have done nothing to stop this and very probably have no clue all of this is happening.

Even tough the mountain lies next to San Pedro Sula, the second biggest city in the country most Hondurans have no interest on visiting the national park. Most likely due to the lack of a travel culture in the country. If more people knew all of this is no longer available for our future generations maybe it had a chance to surviving.

Visit Cusuco National Park and open your eyes to an abandon society of mountain villages, to unique species of animals that dont exist anywhere else in the country or the world and to the vast destruction that continues just because we are doing nothing to stop it.
